Fall Days and Reflection — November 11, 2024

Fall Days and Reflection

The weather has finally started to turn in Seattle. We’ve officially hit ‘The Grey’. That time of year when it’s consistently 45° for a high temp every day. When we’ll have week long stretches of intermittent rain. And when all the California transplants regret moving this far north.

In between all the grey and the rain though, there are still moments of beauty to be found. Moments when the rain stops and the clouds part and the sheer majesty of fall in the PNW is put on display.

Looking south down the Duwamish Waterway towards Mt Rainier at sunrise. Admiring the view of Downtown from Kerry Park. Looking out towards Elliot Bay from Pike Place. Walking through the hidden gem that is Waterfall Garden Park.

After the events of this last week I’ve needed to take some extra time to shut out the fear, the anxiety, and the hopelessness I’ve felt and just appreciate the beauty around me. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m in a better place than I was the night of November 5th.

Here’s to everyone trying to get better.

Grandson of Late Johnny Cash Sings Folsom Prison Blues

Thomas Gabriel is the eldest grandchild of Johnny Cash, and recently a video of him covering Folsom Prison Blues went viral on TikTok.

I’m amazed at how similar he sounds to his grandfather. It’s not perfect, but I think if you close your eyes and just listen to it, most people would be shocked to learn it’s not Cash himself.

I included the video here as well, so if you’re like me and want nothing to do with TikTok, watch away.

How Can you Not Be Romantic About Baseball? — August 4, 2023

How Can you Not Be Romantic About Baseball?

Kudos to Michael Clair of MLB for this heartwarming story about finding the joy of baseball in even the most remote of locations. Add in those spectacular photographs from Matthew DeSantis, and this is easily my favorite news story of the week.

Sometimes known as the world’s last Shangri-La, this nation of snowy alpine peaks and untouched mountain streams has fewer than 700,000 people who call it home. And yet perhaps the most remote country in the world is on its way to being a baseballing nation, growing from a few dozen kids playing on a concrete slab after school to more than 6,000 children who are fast becoming baseball fanatics despite few having ever seen a Major League game.
